Jesse Marsch: The failed Leeds United experiment

Any coach following on from the legendary Marcelo Bielsa was always going to have an extremely tough act to follow. Bielsa was such a revered figure at Elland Road that living up to his status was a near-impossible job. So, the Jesse Marsch experiment – to an extent – always felt doomed to fail. In fairness, the American had shown his credentials at New York Red Bulls and RB Salzburg, so it wasn’t a completely left-field appointment. And there was hope when he helped pull a memorable rescue job at the end of the 2021-22 season. But there were too many familiar failings during the next campaign, and there was an air of inevitability about his dismissal in February 2023, with Leeds going on to be relegated at the end of that campaign.

Jesse Marsch’s road to Leeds United

Marsch was a coach who came through the Red Bull talent pool, taking charge of both New York Bulls and RB Salzburg, enjoying success at both. It was those stints that earned him the opportunity at Leeds United.

Jesse Marsch’s career achievements

Marsch may have endured a difficult spell at Leeds, but prior to that the American coach had enjoyed success in both MLS and the Austrian Bundesliga. He just could not translate that into success in the Premier League. This summer, he will coach Canada at the 2026 World Cup, with the country one of three host nations alongside the United States and Mexico.
