Simon Wood relishing Elland Road opportunity for Leeds United Women
Simon Wood says it is “exciting” for Leeds United Women to be able to play their game against York City Women at Elland Road.
Woods’ women are returning to Elland Road for the first time this year on Sunday (17 November) and will be looking to get one over their Yorkshire rivals.
Speaking to LUTV (15 November), Wood shared his thoughts on the upcoming clash.
“The players are really excited,” he said. “It is not just playing at Elland Road, it is playing at one of the most iconic stadiums in British football.
“The loyal fan base that we have who go watch at Garforth when we play every week at home is amazing and seeing those supporters is great. Hopefully we can attract a few more to come down and see what we are about.
“What the stadium does is it gives us a setting to show to the masses of Leeds United supporters how the Women’s team are representing the badge, how they are representing the club and it gives the players a platform to showcase their ability and what they are about.
“It is exciting for us and we are delighted with the uptake of tickets because we are hoping as many people that can get down come down and support us do.
“It can only have a positive effect on football in Leeds, in terms of us trying to empower and be good role models around the female game.
“Hopefully, it can inspire other females to play the game and take up the sport. That helps us in the future as a football club”.
Leeds United Women need to win York City Women at Elland Road
Woods’ team have had a fairly decent season in the FA Women’s National League Division One North and currently sit third in the table.
They’re just one point shy of league leaders Middlesbrough and will no doubt be looking to collect all three points this weekend.
Their recent form in the league has been stellar with all five of their last matches ending in a win for the West Yorkshire outfit.
In one of their more recent games, they managed to triumph over Yorkshire rivals Barnsley 2-0 and will no doubt be looking to do the same again against York.

Leeds Women have also just added a new midfielder to their ranks in Beth Guy, who they’ll be looking towards to inspire their performance.
The game on 17 November is a big moment for the West Yorkshire outfit this term and, by the end of the season, the result from this clash could end up being the deciding factor behind whether they gain promotion or not.
