Simon Wood has motivation to seal Leeds United Women promotion after what happened
Leeds United Women had an excellent season, competing at the top end of the table, but promotion proved to be a step too far.
Competing in the lower levels is no easy task, with only one promotion spot available, reserved for whoever wins the league, making the competition tough.
Simon Wood’s side finished fourth in the table, 10 points away from the top spot, although the foundations have been made to build upon.
Despite that, Sunday was a day to remember, with yet more silverware coming home to Elland Road.

Leeds United lift silverware
Although Leeds made plenty of progress this season and reached levels to be proud of, not having anything to show for it at the end of the campaign is never easy.
Thankfully, Wood’s side had a final chance to get their hands on silverware with a County Cup final against Halifax on Sunday (18 May).
Although the Whites were the favourites going into the game, being a higher-ranked side than their opponents, it was Halifax who took the lead in the first half.
Whatever Wood said to his side at half-time seemingly did the trick, though, and Amy Woodruff contributed, as she has so many times this season, to level the scores after the break.
Neither side could get themselves in front, and the game had to be settled on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Leeds did what they needed to do and won the County Cup by winning the penalty shootout 4-2.
Wood has motivation for Leeds United
Admittedly, Leeds would have hoped to do better in the final against a side ranked below them in the pyramid.
However, given Leeds’ season finished at the end of April and they had to wait so long to play the final, it was never going to be easy to get back into that swing without the momentum of regular games.
In addition, this also serves the boss a reminder that there is plenty of work to be done throughout the summer to get the Whites up to the standards they need to be at to compete at the very top next term.
Team | Position | Goal Difference | Points |
Middlesbrough | 1 | 32 | 51 |
Cheadle Town | 2 | 27 | 51 |
Chorley | 3 | 17 | 43 |
Leeds United | 4 | 21 | 42 |
Nevertheless, getting their hands on silverware will be a massive boost for the players and give them a taste of the success they can replicate next term, should they push to the top of the table once more.
It won’t be an easy task in such a tight league, but Wood has to use this success to spur his side on to further accomplishments.
