Simon Wood already has Leeds United Women ‘star’ ready for next season

Leeds United Women have had an excellent season, competing constantly at the top of the table.

However, promotion is now off the table after a recent dip in Leeds’ form and other results going against them.

Simon Wood’s side beat Stockport County 2-0 on Sunday (30 March) but now sit fifth in the league, 10 points off the top spot with just two games left to play.

Amy Woodruff stands out against Stockport

Amy Woodruff rejoined Leeds at the start of the season and has been a regular part of Wood’s side, that have been battling at the top end of the table.

Against Stockport, it was Woodruff who got on the scoresheet twice to score the goals that made the difference and gain all three points.

The striker’s pace saw her get on the end of a nice ball into the box to tap in a simple finish, but it was her second goal which stole the show.

After battling with her defender to keep the ball, a beautifully well-timed strike from the edge of the box 10 minutes later showed the quality that Woodruff possesses up top.

Woodruff to be a vital part of Leeds United team next season

Woodruff has kept her standards high throughout the season, and against Stockport, she highlighted just why Wood felt it was essential to bring her back to West Yorkshire.

The boss will no doubt need to make changes to his side next term to ensure there is plenty of quality to push right until the end of the campaign, but Woodruff will surely be someone who is set to remain a big part of the side.

The striker has previously credited her Leeds teammates and expressed her joy about being with the Whites, so you can imagine that both parties will be eager to push on with one another next season.

Leeds have two games left this season, their next being against third-placed Chorley, which, while it no longer means anything, would be a great chance to show that they do have the quality to compete.

Leeds United can still finish third in the league.

The title is out of reach but if they win their two remaining games and Chorley and Huddersfield don’t, then Wood’s side can still finish third in the table, which is a strong position.

After finishing the campaign as well as possible, the boss will be prepared to add to the quality he already has in his team and hope his side can go all the way next season, rather than showing signs similar to those of the men’s side at Elland Road.
