Leeds United Women win streak key for promotion six-pointers v Durham Cestria and Hull City LFC
Leeds United Women will be eyeing a third-straight win in their upcoming clash with Durham Cestria in what looks like the first of two six-pointers with rivals near the top of the table.
If there is to be any hope of promotion from FAWNL Division One North then keeping the momentum going will be crucial, with Hull City LFC next up.
With the next opponents currently four points ahead of the Whites in third but having played two games more it is all the more important that Simon Wood’s side reel them in while they have the advantage of games in hand.
A disrupted season has left every side in the top five having played a different number of league matches so far, with Leeds on 13 having at least one in hand on everyone above them aside from Hull in fourth who have only appeared 12 times so far.
The home fixture against them a week following the trip to Durham will be just as crucial, but heading into that clash on the back of a three-game win streak could be vital.
Leeds United Women games in hand give table misleading look
Wood admitted the campaign has been “stop, start” following the gritty 1-0 win last time out but stringing some results together now ahead of the run in could yet lead to a very satisfying conclusion to the campaign.
Goalscorer Katie Astle wasn’t getting ahead of herself after deciding the game against Norton & Stockton Ancients [LUFC vs Everybody, 26 February], pointing instead to simply taking the confidence of another three points into training for the next game.
Closing the gap on Durham in Sunderland on 3 March will surely increase that belief even further and send the side into the Hull clash on 10 March potentially looking to climb above their opponents into fourth.
It has been difficult to generate much momentum since the start of 2024 but it is starting to look possible now heading into some key games back to back, and putting together a run could quickly change the make-up of the league table.
