Leeds United Women: Simon Wood sets new target after victory over Norton & Stockton Ancients

Simon Wood has challenged his Leeds United Women side climb the table after returning to winning ways against Norton & Stockton Ancients.

The Whites have endured a stop-start beginning to 2024, much to Wood’s disappointment, with this just their fourth game of the calendar year due to cup ties and postponements.

Leeds are now fifth in the FAWNL Division One North with nine games to go, the next of which is against Durham Cestria next weekend.

Speaking to LUTV [25 February], head coach Wood said: “We spoke before the game today about resetting a little bit. Before today there was 10 games to go and each one will have its own challenges.

“Looking at them individually, let’s get the points that gets us moving up the table and see where we can finish. Realistically, it has been stop-start, but we want to now push on and represent the badge.

“I’m extremely proud of all the players over the effort and work they put in. We created a lot of chances and probably should have had the game out of sight.

“It took us a while to get going in the second half. As the game settled down it became open and we should have put our chances away.”

Middlesbrough lead way in Division One North standings

Due to the various postponements, the Division One North table does not tell a true picture.

Fifth-place Leeds still have three games in hand on leaders Middlesbrough, who are eight points better off.

Hull City in fourth are are five points behind Boro and have four games in hand, so there is still plenty of time for the picture to change completely.

As Wood says, all Leeds can do is get points on the board and see where they end up.

March is shaping up to be a very hectic month, with games against Durham, Hull, United of Manchester, Chorley, Norton and Barnsley to come.

Kate Astle’s winning goal to see off Norton was a good way to get some momentum going and that could come in handy ahead of the March madness.

Should Wood’s side make it three league wins in a row next weekend, then anything is possible.
