Simon Wood makes ‘disruption’ admission after Leeds United Women win

Leeds United Women manager Simon Wood admits the “stop-start” nature of this season’s league campaign has made things difficult.

The Whites defeated Chester le Street United Women 3-1 on Sunday (4 February) to move up to fifth place in the WPL Division One North table.

That was just Leeds’ third league game of 2024, but Wood is pleased that his side are staying within touching distance of the teams above them.

“There’s been a lot of disruptions with the cup competitions,” he told Leeds United TV [4 February].

“The league campaign has been stop-start, but this month we have three fixtures.

“If we can compete with the teams at the top, they will drop points. We need to keep picking up points to put pressure on those teams.”

“The elements were hard for both teams in the first half today. We had the benefit in the second half. But it was a real gutsy performance.

“We spoke before the game about coming to teams in the bottom half, scrapping, and finding your inner drive.

“The first half we managed the conditions well. In the second half we showed a real determination and the fighting spirit saw us through today.”

Leeds United Women’s upcoming fixtures

Leeds United Women got the job done against Chester le Street thanks to goals from Ellie Dobson, Leoni Price and Jess Rousseau.

They are still nine points adrift of division leaders Middlesbrough, but they do have two games in hand.

Momentum has been next to impossible to build over the past couple of months, but at least there are three more games to come this month.

After seeing off Chester le Street, Wood’s side now switch focus to next Sunday’s (11 February) visit of Chorley.

There is then a short trip to York City, before ending the month away at Norton and Stockton Ancients.

If Leeds can pick up nine points from those games – an extremely tough ask, granted – then they will find themselves in a very strong position in the table.

After defeat to Middlesbrough last time out, this latest performance does at least provide some real positives going forward.
