Leeds United Women momentum lost after Chester-le-Street Town win as Chorley trip called off
Leeds United Women have been hit by another momentum killer as a postponed match represents a frustrating development for Olivia Smart and company.
Schedule disruption has proven an issue this season and so continued thanks to waterlogged pitch, according to the team’s official website.
Having bounced back from a January defeat at league-leaders Middlesbrough by overcoming Chester-le-Street Town 3-1 on 4 February the chance to carry that into the clash against Chorley straight away would have been what Simon Wood and his side were quickly gearing up for.
Instead they are left with a fortnight’s wait for their next action and the visit of York City on 21 February, assuming there is no reason for that to also be delayed.
There is as-yet no word of when the trip to the Bannister Prentice Stadium will be rescheduled but Leeds United Women currently face a busy end to the campaign while the teams above them in the FAWNL Division One North wait to see how much of the gap can be closed.
In some circumstances games in hand can function as a psychological bonus, but only if points are dropped elsewhere.
If the gap widens too far, particularly while the chasing party struggles for momentum amid a stop-start campaign, it can equally work in reverse.
The 3-1 win at Moor Park, thanks to goals from Ellie Dobson, Leoni Price and Jess Rousseau had got the league campaign back on track, with a six point gap to Durham Cestria in fourth who have played two more.
Leeds United Women must wait for chance to build on gritty win
After the victory stand-in skipper Smart had praised the team “all digging in”, having not seen enough of that fight this season, and expressed hope to LUTV that the weather would improve with games ahead back in the North-East, but she didn’t get her wish as the following trip was duly called off.
Wood had also been pleased with the “determination” in difficult conditions [LUTV] and would have hoped to build on that performance at the earliest opportunity as he looked forward to three league games after “stop start” action thanks to cup competitions.
But he will need to build the XI back up for the next match off the back of an extra week’s lay off, if the visit of York City goes ahead.
In other Leeds United news, Adam Pope fears action that was “not a good look” will now come back to bite the club.
