Leeds United Women must take full advantage after ‘massive’ Simon Wood claim
Leeds United Women put on a show for supporters on their return to home soil as they saw off York City Ladies 5-1 on Thursday (21 March).
The Whites were back playing in Garforth in the league for the first time since January, with all four of their games in the competition since then away from home.
In what has been a stop-start campaign for Leeds, they now finally have a chance to build some momentum heading into the finale of the season.
Asked by LUTV [21 March] after the match what it meant playing in front of home fans again, manager Simon Wood said: “It’s massive.
“We’ve got a few away games to play, but also a lot of home games that we want people to come down and watch.
“We heard the crowd and it does mean a lot – it spurs the girls on. If we can get results and perform like that, hopefully people will be entertained.”
Leeds United Women sixth in FAWNL Division One
Leeds are now sixth in the FA Women’s National League Division One North, but the league table does not tell the whole story right now.
Indeed, United have three games in hand on leaders Middlesbrough, who are currently 11 points better off, so they can certainly climb the table.
The performance against York was one of the best of the campaign to date, with Jess Rousseau netting a hat-trick at Bannister Prentice Stadium.
Charlyann Pizzarello and Alice Hughes were also on target with impressive strikes against a York side that had showed signs of improvement.
As Wood says, it is now a case of building some momentum, which has certainly not been easy to do so far this campaign.
Three of the next four games are on home soil, the first of those being the visit of Norton & Stockton Ancients this coming weekend.
Should back-to-back wins be achieved, it will make the picture look a lot brighter in terms of the league table.
Winning home games will be key to Leeds’ hopes of climbing the division, and thankfully they now have a chance to do exactly that.
