Wrexham line up Mateo Joseph deal as promotion gamble on the cards

Wrexham have taken an interest in signing Mateo Joseph from Leeds United if they are promoted to the Premier League, MOT Leeds News has learned.

Joseph’s time with Leeds has been far from pleasing, with the Spaniard having scored just six goals in 73 appearances before being shipped out on loan to Mallorca.

Many of those appearances have been as a late substitute, but with two goals in 19 starts in LaLiga, his goal-per-minute ratio isnt getting much better.

Joseph is looking likely to leave Leeds permanently this summer, and Wrexham are one of those lining up a potential deal.

Mateo Joseph transfer hinges on promotion at Wrexham

Wrexham are one of three Championship clubs to have shown an interest in Joseph, MOT Leeds News understands, with his career at Elland Road already looking to be finished.

His contract at Leeds expires in 2028, meaning the Whites will be well-placed to get a somewhat decent fee for his exit this summer should that be the route they opt to take.

However, Phil Parkinson’s side are only looking into a deal with promotion in mind, knowing the financial restraints if they are to fail in their attempts to make it into the Premier League for the first time in their history.

Leeds were said to be holding out for a fee in the region of £15million for Joseph last summer, but it is believed that they would be willing to accept half of that come the end of the campaign.

Where did it go wrong for Joseph at Leeds?

When Joseph first broke through for Leeds, they were in a relegation scrap in the Premier League, with the Whites having very little room to experiment.

The two seasons following that, Daniel Farke’s side were chasing promotion, and again, they could afford to take very few risks.

That ultimately led to a distinct lack of gametime for the Spaniard, who had a limited number of minutes to impress, which he didn’t.

Had the pressure been reduced, Joseph may well have thrived, but that scenario can be added to the list of things we may never know.
