What are Leeds United’s next steps with Max Wober as nightmare away from Elland Road continues?

Leeds United face multiple avenues that they can explore if they don’t get what they want with Max Wober this summer.

The Austrian has suffered a nightmare of a campaign this season, having been practically ruled out through injury for most of the time.

The centre-back joined German side Werder Bremen in the summer, and has still only managed to make one appearance, which came all the way back in August.

While Leeds could bank money from Wober, the chances of that coming from the Bundesliga side look extremely unlikely, leaving the 49ers with big calls to make soon.

Leeds forecast for £7.5m loss at best with Max Wober; here’s why

Werder Bremen can buy Wober for £3.5million, a clause which was included in the Leeds loanee’s contract with the German side.

But it’s already well documented that they are frustrated with how the transfer has panned out, and triggering the buy option is out of the question.

The Whites splashed £11m on the centre-half, as reported by Sky Sports, and even if they were able to sell him on for £3.5m, it would still be a net loss of £7.5m.

But recouping any money for the 28-year-old seems a bit of a stretch right now, as it could be hard to find a suitable buyer this summer, leaving another loan move likely.

Wober is tied down to Elland Road until the summer of 2027, and the smart thing for the 49ers to do would be to first try to find a buyer, and if not, someone who will take the risk of paying his wages for a loan deal next season.

Even an offer of £1million for the defender would look good right now, especially considering his doubts about his own future.

Wober’s comments about injury problems are scary, could he be released?

Wober has confirmed that he is “far from” being able to play football without pain, as his ongoing calf issue is restricting him from his dream.

The former RB Salzburg man seems determined to get back to his best, but he also seems to accept the challenge in front of him.

The problem he now faces upon his inevitable return to Thorp Arch this summer is that he may find it hard to land himself a new club.

A compromise to mutually terminate his contract in LS11 could even be on the cards, which would help him find a new destination a lot more easily.
