Sebastiaan Bornauw’s Leeds United contract situation examined as struggles continue

Sebastiaan Bornauw has struggled in his debut campaign with Leeds United.

The four-time Belgium international completed a move to Elland Road in the summer, but has failed to cement a regular spot in the side.

Fellow summer signings Jaka Bijol and James Justin have taken up starting roles in the starting XI under Daniel Farke for the most part.

That has left the 26-year-old to hardly feature in the Premier League, with injuries also playing their part on his struggles in LS11.

Bornauw could face an uncertain future at Leeds, and now, MOT Leeds News has rounded up what we know about his current contract.

How long does Sebastiaan Bornauw’s Leeds contract run?

There was initial excitement when the right-footed centre-half came in from the Bundesliga over the summer.

Leeds wanted to seriously improve their defence, and the addition of a six-foot-two defender appeared wise.

That hasn’t transpired as his Premier League stats make for pretty grim reading, especially considering the £5.1million transfer spend.

It isn’t a crazy figure for today’s day and age, but it does feel like a waste on a four-year contract at a weekly wage of a reported £45,000. That means it will still have three years to run from this summer.

Based on that, the Belgian’s yearly wage comes in around £2.3m, which is a sizable figure for someone who has hardly played in LS11.

Bornauw may already be surplus to requirements at Leeds, and that could prompt his contract to be cut short after just 12 months.

Could Bornauw force a Leeds exit?

In four years at Wolfsburg, the Belgian made 96 appearances, but if this season is anything to go by, he won’t reach that tally at Elland Road.

The defender has made just four Premier League starts under Farke and doesn’t look likely to get many more unless another option suffers an injury or suspension problem.

That could prompt him to eye an immediate exit once the summer transfer window opens, should the Whites be able to find a replacement.

If that isn’t possible, Bornauw may stick around in Yorkshire and look into an exit further down the line with the hope of featuring more regularly for Leeds.
