Luke Ayling: Leeds United fans have reason to root for Middlesbrough promotion as new contract signed
Luke Ayling has signed a new one-year contract extension with Championship side Middlesbrough, as the former Leeds United star looks to help Boro reach the Premier League.
Now 34-years old, Ayling left Leeds to join Middlesbrough on an initial loan deal back in January 2024, where he registered a whopping eight assists in 19 Championship games in the second half of the 2023-24 season.
Boro, rather unsurprisingly, made his permanent signature a priority in the summer of 2024, and they were able to secure it on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Elland Road.
Ayling made over 260 appearances for Leeds after joining the Whites in 2016 from Bristol City, and remains one of the Club’s best bargain buys in recent times.
He left on the aforementioned free transfer with the blessings of all Leeds supporters, and should things go well for him and Middlesbrough in their final seven games, there could be an Elland Road reunion on the cards.

What has Luke Ayling said about new Middlesbrough contract?
Ayling’s love for Leeds United has always remained since his move to bitter rivals Middlesbrough, and has even been back to watch the team since becoming a Boro player.
That love is a mutual one too, as Whites fans enjoyed seven-and-a-half years of him flying down the flanks, getting bags of goal contributions, and of course, his impossible not to love personality.
| Ayling’s 25-26 Championship stats for Boro | Result |
| Appearances | 36 |
| Goal contributions | 6 |
| Team of the week | 5 |
| Pass accuracy | 86% |
| Ground duels won | 68% |
However, that affection hasn’t always been reciprocated for him on Teesside, as even by his own admission, the versatile defender endured a rough 2024-25 season for Middlesbrough.
He made a number of costly errors for Boro last season, and had many fans keen on seeing their recruitment chiefs source his replacement, but he’s been able to carve out a key role this term once again.
Speaking via Middlesbrough’s official club website, Ayling said of his new one-year deal: “I’m absolutely delighted.
“Last season wasn’t great for me, and I wanted to show people I could still play at this level, and I’ve enjoyed this season.
“We’re all trying to get this club back where it should be. It’s been a great season so far.
“We’ve seven games left – the fans have a massive part to play as well – and we want to make those seven games special.”
Seeing Ayling playing at Elland Road again would be brilliant
A crucial part of Leeds’ Championship title-winning team of 2019-20, and one of the first names many fans will think of when reminiscing on the Marcelo Bielsa era, Ayling remains a hugely popular figure at Elland Road.
He gave everything for the shirt each and every time he stepped on the pitch, and that, combined with his character and quality across both Championship and Premier League campaigns, saw him forever earn a place in Leeds fans’ hearts.
So, whilst it may well mean rooting for Middlesbrough, which few Whites fans will have a particular desire to do, there is a ‘greater good’ argument for wanting to see them back in the Premier League because of Ayling.
It’s undeniable: seeing him turning out at Elland Road once again, even if it’s not in the White shirt, would be wonderful sight to see.
