Leeds United: Uncomfortable Dan James conversation to be had after fresh setback

Leeds United may come to the conclusion that Dan James needs to be sold this summer following another injury that will keep him out for weeks.

The Whites beat West Ham on penalties this Sunday to force their way through to the FA Cup semi-finals, but James was absent from the squad.

Daniel Farke already has multiple injuries that he now needs to deal with following the clash at the London Stadium, and this is where James’ availability comes as a real concern.

Leeds are trying to stay in the Premier League this season, and though the Welshman does have perks he can bring to Farke’s squad, his role at Elland Road hasn’t been justified this season.

Leeds may open the door for James to leave upon review of their season, especially if he remains unfit for the run-in.

What has been said about Dan James’ injury?

Wales head coach Craig Bellamy admitted that James had an issue after their nation’s exit from the World Cup qualifiers through defeat to Bosnia.

However, the right-winger played in Wales’ friendly game against Northern Ireland before returning to Thorp Arch, where he was then deemed unfit for the West Ham match.

Dan James’ Championship stats (2024-25)

As seen in the table above, James was one of Leeds’ best players in the Championship last season, and there was hope that he could help the Whites this term.

However, as highlighted by Beren Cross on X, the 28-year-old has suffered another setback through an adductor strain, and is set to miss a “few weeks”.

This could see the forward miss crucial Premier League matches, where Farke may need someone with his pace and attacking outlet.

It may put into perspective for Leeds that the 49ers could do with selling James and spending the money on someone who offers similar skills, but an individual who is a lot less injury prone.

Wilfried Gnonto could see game time increase

Wilfried Gnonto came off the bench and played a healthy amount of minutes for the Whites against West Ham, coming close to scoring on multiple occassions.

The Italian is another player who could be up for sale this month, but considering his versatility in attacking areas, James’ injury could be the former’s gain.

Gnonto did show signs of his rust at the London Stadium, and could have put the game to bed for Leeds way before the shootout,

However, his hunger and desire were there to see, as the young forward won a whopping eight out of his nine ground duels, being fouled five times.

Farke may use the winger more off the bench as Leeds face a crucial Premier League stretch to end the campaign.
