Leeds United to pay price with Werder Bremen set to make major Isaac Schmidt mistake
Leeds United are set to pay the price for Werder Bremen’s mistake over Isaac Schmidt.
Left-back Schmidt joined the Bundesliga club on a loan deal until the end of the campaign, but he looks destined to return to Elland Road after failing to make an impression.
The 26-year-old played 14 times in all competitions during his stint in Yorkshire but started just twice in 2024-25 as the Whites won the Championship title.
He had arrived with a glowing reputation from Swiss outfit St. Gallen for £2.5million in 2024, but instead, he couldn’t break through under Daniel Farke before being offloaded.
Schmidt clearly faces an uncertain future at Leeds, but it may not actually be his fault.

Werder Bremen close to Isaac Schmidt decision already
According to reports, Werder Bremen are “rather unlikely” to sign the full-back permanently.
Indeed, German publication DeichStube have claimed that the outfit have little interest in taking up the option, despite appreciating his versatility and steady performances.
| Schmidt 24-25 | Statistic | Schmidt 25-26 |
| 13 | Matches played | 16 |
| 2 | Starts | 5 |
| 0 | Goal contributions | 1 |
| 3.4 | Tackles per game | 0.8 |
| 2.4 | Interceptions per game | 1.3 |
| 0.5 | Dribbled past per game | 1.0 |
This is despite Bremen viewing Schmidt as a potential bargain.
His playing time has been sporadic, mirroring his limited role at Leeds, with most of his 16 top-flight appearances to date coming from the bench.
His dilemma is in stark contrast to Bremen’s lengthy pursuit of the defender, with the club finally able to seal his signature to cover Olivier Deman and Mitchell Weiser’s absences.
But while club figures are not overly impressed, they are being a little too harsh.
His statistics, via Sofascore, are fairly reasonable in light of his lack of opportunities. He has scored one goal in the league and boasts a pass completion rate of 77 per cent.
Defensively, Schmidt averages 0.5 interceptions and 0.8 tackles per game, while his 63 per cent dribble success rate has allowed him to create danger down the left channel.

On top of that, he recovers 2.1 balls per 90 minutes and has won 55 per cent of his total duels, suggesting he should, at the very least, be a squad player for Bremen next season.
Leeds handed unwanted Schmidt headache
Through no fault of their own, Leeds will now have to put plans in place for Schmidt. They will be disappointed that Bremen have decided not to exercise the £2m option to buy.
Schmidt will, therefore, be sent packing back to Elland Road in June, but he would do well not to hurriedly unpack his suitcases once he does touch down in England.
That is because he will almost certainly play no part in Farke’s plans for next season, regardless of whatever league the Whites will be in. Instead, a permanent departure looms.
Given Leeds paid next to nothing for him in the first place, his potential suitors should have no trouble meeting his price tag. Either way, it will end a chapter he’d rather forget.
