Leeds United to be filled with regret as Wrexham line up Mateo Joseph deal

Leeds United may be wishing they had cashed in on Mateo Joseph earlier.

Joseph was once a promising young striker looking to make his way at Elland Road, but that potential very quickly turned into a lack of current ability.

The Spaniard struggled for minutes under Daniel Farke, but when he was handed the chance to impress, he failed to do so, resulting in a loan move to Mallorca at the start of the current campaign.

Joseph has been linked with an exit from Leeds again, as revealed by MOT Leeds News, and it could force the Whites to regret past decisions.

Real Betis bid rejection could bite Leeds in the future

Real Betis made an attempt to sign Joseph from Leeds in January 2025 for a fee in the region of £10million, but the Whites rejected their approach on the basis that the striker was deemed to be too important.

By the end of the campaign, Joseph had scored just three Championship goals for Leeds, having failed to have any real influence on their promotion.

Fast forward to now, and the Spaniard is struggling on loan at Mallorca, where he has managed just two goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.

Wrexham are keen on signing Joseph this summer, and it may take a bid of just £7.5m to secure his services, which is considerably less than Leeds may have got had they opted to sell him 12 months ago.

What could the future hold for Joseph?

With Joseph turning 23 later this year, he is no longer a promising young forward who needs time to develop; he’s a fringe player who will have no part to play next season.

While Leeds may get less for his exit this summer in comparison to what they may have got last year, they will have to take what they can get and part ways with him.

Farke will have no use for him in the Premier League, should that be where Leeds remain, and another loan would do nothing for either party.
