Leeds United talks confirmed as Hidemasa Morita transfer remains on track
Leeds United have held talks over the free signing of Hidemasa Morita.
Leeds are in for another big summer of recruitment, with plans likely to be accelerated as soon as their Premier League status is confirmed.
That could happen before the Whites take to the pitch to face Tottenham if West Ham fall to defeat against Arsenal.
Nevertheless, Daniel Farke’s sides already have some plans put into place, having been linked with a move to sign Morita from Sporting.
Reports that Morita has held talks with Leeds have since been confirmed, though the Whites face competition.

Leeds in a three-way battle for Hidemasa Morita
Leeds are keen on Morita for all of the right reasons as they look to bolster their midfield depth ahead of the new campaign.
And according to a report from TEAMtalk, they are still seen as the favourites to land him on a free transfer, with talks over a two-year deal.
| Hidemasa Morita | 2025-26 |
| Games (starts) | 29 (21) |
| Goals/assists | 1/4 |
| Key passes per game | 0.7 |
| Tackles per game | 1.7 |
| Average Sofascore rating | 6.95 |
However, Aston Villa and Brighton have also shown an interest in the Japan international, who has been a regular for Sporting over the last few years.

It’s claimed that Leeds see Morita as “one of the standout free-agent opportunities”, which makes sense given the experience he has at the top level.
Morita transfer could be bad news for Ilia Gruev
If Morita were to join, it would almost certainly be to replace either Sean Longstaff or Ilia Gruev.
The former has had minutes reduced signifcantl;y in 2026, while the latter is perhaps the closest profile to Morita given his defensive nature.
Ethan Ampadu is highly unlikely to lose his place, and given the experience and options that the Japan international will have, it would be hard to see him moving to Elland Road without assurances over gametime.
