Leeds United: Sam Byram’s contract examined as expiry date looms at Elland Road

Leeds United defender Sam Byram faces an uncertain future at Elland Road as his contract edges closer to its end date.

The full-back departed West Yorkshire in 2016 before making his return in the summer of 2023, where he featured regularly in the Championship.

Daniel Farke utilised the services of the experienced defender when needed, and he certainly played a role in the promotion campaign.

That utility role hasn’t continued into the Premier League as he has made just one appearance so far this campaign in the top tier.

Byram may now be edging closer to a Leeds exit, as MOT Leeds News assesses what we know about his contract situation in LS11.

What is Sam Byram’s contract situation at Leeds United?

The Englishman has hardly featured for the Whites since the Championship trophy was lifted away to Plymouth Argyle.

That hasn’t exactly come as a surprise, although his experience around the squad should be having a positive impact in Yorkshire.

Sam Byram career stats

He has played in just seven minutes of Premier League action, with his other three outings coming in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

It will be interesting to see how many more games he plays at Elland Road, with his current deal set to expire in the summer after only putting pen to paper on new terms last summer.

Reports suggest that he is being paid £25,000 per week, at a yearly salary of approximately £1.3million.

And it remains to be seen whether Farke is willing to let Byram leave Leeds this summer, or whether a new deal is in the pipeline.

Could Bryam sign a new deal at Leeds?

There are a growing list of players in modern football who play a role within the dressing room as opposed to on the pitch.

Goalkeepers typically take up this sort of role, but it appears that Byram has featured in that sort of area this campaign.

That could act as a useful area for Byram, especially considering his wide range of experience in the Premier League and Championship.

A one-year deal on reduced wages may prove to be beneficial for all parties, but the situation is totally up in the air at this stage of the season.
