Leeds United may yet get Max Wober shop window opportunity as World Cup hopes alive

Leeds United may yet get a chance to land some welcome millions for forgotten defender Max Wober this summer.

Wober has spent the campaign on loan with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, but he has been restricted to just one appearance due to injuries.

The Austria international, who spent last season with Borussia Monchengladbach, will have one more year to run on his Elland Road deal come the end of the campaign.

If Leeds are to have any hope of recouping some of the £12million paid to sign Wober from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, they quite simply need him back on the field soon.

And in a positive update a couple of months out from the transfer window opening, Wober could yet be back in time to feature at the World Cup.

Max Wober given World Cup hope

Werder Bremen are unlikely to snap up Wober in the summer, despite having the opportunity to do so for a fee of around £3.5million.

It says an awful lot about the 28-year-old’s current stock that Bremen do not consider that small sum good value for money.

Max Wober’s injury history

That is purely down to Wober’s lack of action. However, as per Bild’s print edition on Tuesday, Wober is still dreaming of competing at this summer’s World Cup.

And after slowly building up his fitness behind the scenes for Bremen’s Under-21s side, coach Daniel Thioune has confirmed Wober still has his sights on the global showpiece.

“Max still wants to jump on the World Cup bandwagon. He needs playing time to get into his stride,” Thioune said.

The same report adds that Austria boss Ralf Rangnick has Wober in his thoughts ahead of naming his squad in a month or so.

Wober return could be great news for Leeds

Wober almost certainly does not have a future at Elland Road, especially now that Premier League safety is as good as confirmed.

However, Leeds will still hope to land a few million quid for the defender, which can go towards new signings.

The only way that is realistically going to happen is if Wober plays some games. Should he be part of the Austria squad at the World Cup, that would very much put him in the shop window.

For now, though, that realistically seems a pipe dream. Wober deserves sympathy for his injury issues, but at the same time they are likely to cost Leeds any chance of landing some added millions.
