Leeds United: Largie Ramazani outdoing Matteo Joseph as LaLiga experience pays off

Leeds United loanee Largie Ramazani is having more joy at Valencia than Mateo Joseph is at Mallorca due to his previous La Liga experience.

That is according to Matthew Clark, editor of La Liga Lowdown, who states that Ramazani’s spell at Almeria before joining Leeds has paid dividends this season.

In the first half of the campaign, that did not look to be true as Ramazani struggled for game time at Valencia, while Joseph saw plenty of action with Mallorca.

But as Valencia ease away from the relegation zone, while Mallorca languish in it, Ramazani is beginning to thrive, while Joseph is hardly setting the world alight.

Leeds may have hoped to sell both this summer but it seems Ramazani’s valuation has increased, and not Joseph’s.

Mateo Joseph vs Largie Ramazani

So far, Joseph has scored twice and added three assists in 29 games in all competitions for 18th-placed Mallorca.

He has made 19 starts, with the 22-year-old being deployed as a centre-forward, a left and right winger, a supporting striker, and a right midfielder.

The Spain Under-21 international hasn’t scored since mid-October, whereas Ramazani has five goals in his last eight La Liga games.

The 25-year-old has chalked up just nine starts this season but he is doing a lot more with less than Joseph.

Ramazani has scored five goals from an Expected Goals tally of 4.83, whereas Joseph’s xG is 5.09 but he has just two goals to his name.

Ramazani has missed two big chances whereas Joseph has spurned eight of his own. The latter has created three big chances to two but one of the main negatives for Ramazani is that he has picked up four bookings to Joseph’s two – which isn’t a big blotch on his name, either.

And according to Clark, Ramazani’s previous La Liga experience is shining through now.

He exclusively told MOT Leeds News: “Mateo Joseph has been a steady presence for Mallorca in a struggling team.

“His best period came in October when he set up an equalising goal against Athletic Club before scoring twice off the bench in a win at Sevilla.

“Team struggles have meant he hasn’t been able to consistently produce, but under Martín Demichelis, he is featuring more than he had been under Jagoba Arrasate.

“Large Ramazani’s story is more impressive. Having played in La Liga before, with Almería, that surely helped him adapt. He hasn’t featured as much (only six starts) but has been more decisive.

“He came off the bench to score a huge pressure penalty in the 94th minute of a must-win game against Espanyol, and has kicked on from there.”

Leeds may want Ramazani back

Leeds signed the Belgian Under-21 international from Almeria in August 2024 for a fee of around £10million but he had a frustrating 2024-25 season at Elland Road.

A total of seven goals and two assists in 31 games paints half the picture. The other half comes from starting just nine matches, as he struggled to break into Daniel Farke‘s plans.

He is certainly enjoying himself at Valencia, which has led to speculation over his Leeds future.

Reports suggest Leeds may want Ramazani back at the club if they stay up. And according to Clark, he is maturing as a player.

He added, “Carlos Corberán has faith in him, starts him more now, and he has repaid it with goals against rivals Levante and Villarreal, plus the winning penalty against Osasuna and most recently a goal in a win at Sevilla.

“His calmness in tough situations has seen him come through into the regular side at Valencia, coinciding with an upturn in their form and fortunes.”

So, what will Leeds do with them? Keep? Sell Another loan? Decisions, decisions.
