Leeds United have Jack Harrison transfer silver lining amid Fiorentina uncertainty

Leeds United may yet be able to offload Jack Harrison after saying his Fiorentina loan switch has “opened my mind to a lot more possibilities”.

Following Leeds’ Championship title win last season, Harrison returned to Elland Road after two straight campaigns on loan at Everton.

The 29-year-old had become persona non grata among Leeds fans after deciding against helping them in their fight to get out of the Championship.

The winger featured 13 times for Leeds in the first half of the season but was widely criticised by Whites supporters, with many saying his performances were not up to scratch.

He then joined Fiorentina on loan, with a £6million buy option. Right now, it seems Leeds may not be able to sell Harrison to the Italian team but going by his comments, a summer move elsewhere could happen.

‘Happiness’ key to Jack Harrison’s future

Harrison had a lot of credit in the bank before Leeds got relegated from the Premier League in 2023. He played a big role in ending their 16-year stay out of the top flight in 2020.

He starred in their 2020-21 campaign, in which they finished ninth in the Premier League, and scored a crucial goal on the final day of the following season to keep them up.

Leeds United13 games, no goals or assists
Fiorentina13 games, one assist

But when Harrison decided not to help Leeds get back into the Premier League, that tarnished his reputation among many Leeds fans. Despite that, he still holds the club in high regard.

He told FourFourTwo: “I miss the atmosphere of Elland Road. It’s special. I speak to David de Gea (Fiorentina’s keeper), and he always says that going to Elland Road was incredible.

“A lot of people admire the environment there. They’re very passionate fans. When you have that energy, and everything’s going well around the stadium, it really does give you a boost.”

Harrison admits that England is definitely his home but he has strong ties in the United States, where most of his friends are, after moving out there when he was 14 before playing for New York City in Major League Soccer.

The former Everton loanee added that he loves to travel and explore but above all else, he needs to feel happy at a club to stay or move there. Therefore, if his Fiorentina switch doesn’t happen, a Leeds exit could be on the cards as Whites fans aren’t exactly his biggest fans.

Harrison continued: “Coming out here has opened my mind to a lot more possibilities, just being open and adaptable to go anywhere and to find that happiness. That’s a key thing for me.

“If I want to be playing at my best – which contributes a lot towards happiness as well – I have to be somewhere where it’s the best thing for my happiness as well. Finding that place would be incredible. Wherever that is, I’m not quite sure, but I’m open to possibilities.”

Harrison’s surely future lies away from Leeds

While Leeds fans will immediately go to how Harrison didn’t help them over the past couple of years, before returning for their Premier League comeback, the club didn’t treat him particularly well in early 2023.

Seemingly out of the blue, the club were willing to sanction a move to Leicester City in that year’s January transfer window.

Harrison even headed off to Leicester to complete the move before Leeds pulled the plug on the deal. A couple of months later, he signed a long-term contract until 2028.

Leeds had hoped that Harrison would attract higher bids as a result of that but his form has tailed off in recent seasons.

It would probably be a good move for both parties to head in different directions this summer. He was a good servant for Leeds for a while but that time has come and gone.
