Leeds United: Illan Meslier mooted to become Birmingham City’s ‘forever goalkeeper’ with exit near

Leeds United star Illan Meslier is headed for an Elland Road exit this summer, and Birmingham City could look at bringing him in as a free signing.

Many Whites fans were upset to see the goalkeeper sitting down by himself on the grass at Elland Road after the full-time scenes in the 1-0 win over Brighton last weekend,

An image of Meslier soaking up his final time at Leeds’ stadium reached its way onto social media, as the ‘keeper’s contract with the club is set to expire this summer.

The 26-year-old will not be handed new terms by the 49ers, as he’s fallen way down Daniel Farke‘s pecking order, despite a mini goalkeeping crisis that took place this year.

Birmingham could look to sign Meslier, and if they did, the Whites would wish him well.

Birmingham City mooted to make Illan Meslier long-term signing

Meslier’s career has ended on a sad note, but fans will try to remember the good about the shot-stopper instead of the bad.

The Frenchman can hold his own in the Championship, as statistics prove he may not be as bad as everyone made out last season.

As seen in the table above, Meslier had a 70.7 per cent save record in the Championship, allowing just 27 goals past him.

While discussing on Keep Right On – A Birmingham City Podcast, local Blues journalists Alex Dicken and Brian Dick talked about the potential of Meslier coming to St Andrew’s Stadium.

Alex Dicken said: “He’s a really good Championship goalkeeper, I like him, he was good under [Marcelo] Bielsa, he’s a decent goalkeeper in the Championship. Still 26, you could throw a three or four-year contract at him and not be worried about it.”

Brian Dick: “If he’s Blues’ forever goalkeeper, would you be happy with him?”

Dicken replied: “I’d be content with him, yeah.”

It’s important to note that there have been no official reports suggesting that Meslier will join Chris Davies’ side, but given all factors, it would be no surprise to see the Blues make a move.

Can Meslier resurrect his career?

Meslier still has the potential to become a Premier League goalkeeper and is relatively young for a player of his position.

People will remember some of the mistakes that he made for the Whites, but as a shot-stopper, this stuff can stick with you.

Meslier is a top goalkeeper on his day and is usually consistent over the season, and for every error he has, he makes up for it with reflex saves.

Any Championship club would be taking an educated gamble with Meslier, and Birmingham would certainly improve their current number-one situation by signing the out-of-contract Leeds star.

Let’s see where the shot-stopper ends up and how his career pans out. Just look at Elia Caprile, who never once got a chance for the Whites, and is now valued at around £20million by Cagliari.
