Illan Meslier’s Leeds contract set to expire: Transfer latest, Farke’s thoughts and more

Illan Meslier’s Leeds United contract is set to expire in the summer.

Meslier has had a rough year at Elland Road, losing his place as the starting goalkeeper after a series of mistakes in the Championship run-in last season.

His contract with the LS11 side runs until 30 June 2026, and there have been no indications that a new deal is on the cards for the Frenchman.

It looks as though Leeds will part ways with Meslier, who has not featured in this campaign, at the end of the season.

What is the latest transfer news on Meslier?

Meslier has been constantly linked with a departure from Leeds, but nothing has materialised so far.

A report from Foot Mercado on 4 March claimed that Meslier is “attracting attention” ahead of the summer transfer window.

It states that the 25-year-old came close to moving to Turkey in the winter, and that Lorient have explored a return for their former star.

What has Daniel Farke said?

Farke was non-committal when asked about the situation, refusing to admit whether an exit was on the cards for the stopper.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Sunderland in December, the German manager said:

The fact that he refused to commit to a proper answer on Meslier’s future is not a surprise, as manager’s generally do not speak out on potential transfers.

Farke has not selected him at all this season, that tells you exactly what you need to know about his future at Thorp Arch.

How much will Leeds save from Meslier exit?

With an exit seemingly on the cards, thoughts will switch to the amount of money that the Whites will save from letting Meslier leave.

The former Lorient man is reportedly on £30,000-per-week at Elland Road, so it will not be a huge chunk off the wage budget.

In an alternate world, where he stayed and kept the same wage, that would work out at £1,560,000 per year.

So the Peacocks would save just over £1.5m per year, by letting the goalkeeper depart at the end of the campaign.

That seems like a no-brainer for the 49ers Enterprises group, considering that Meslier has not played a part and is clearly not part of Farke’s plans.
