Ilia Gruev could find himself frozen out at Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

Leeds remain focused on achieving survival under Daniel Farke, though it won’t be long until full focus turns to the summer.

The Whites have several areas to improve in their squad, while also having a handful of players that they need to make a decision on.

Prior to his recent resurgence, Ao Tanaka was one of them, but his return to form and importance has pushed those rumours aside.

However, Gruev has fallen down the pecking order as a result, and it does not bode well heading into the transfer window.

As for why, not many can answer it, but Gruev was playing a crucial role for Leeds ahead of the likes of Tanaka and Sean Longstaff.

The latter remains frozen out, but Tanaka has certainly taken his chance in the absence of Anton Stach in recent weeks.

But for Gruev, he has been cast aside at Elland Road, as showcased by the fact that he has failed to start any of the last five games, while also failing to make an appearance in two of them.

That is despite the fact that he had started nine games in a row for the Whites prior to being dropped.

It feels almost certain that one midfielder will leave this summer, and he may prove to be the sacrifice.

Leeds can’t miss out on a financial chance with Gruev

Not only will he be a fringe player next season, but Gruev will also be in the last year of his deal at Elland Road.

It means that this summer may prove to be the last chance they have to get a reasonable fee for his exit, before he is able to negotiate a pre-contract abroad in January.

With PSR issues almost certain to arise in the future, it may be the perfect chance to alleviate some of those concerns early.
