Brenden Aaronson may have make-or-break Leeds start vs Tottenham as contract winds down

Brenden Aaronson is entering the last year of his Leeds United contract in the near future.

The American midfielder is out of contract in June 2027, and there has been no resolution at the moment between the player and the Elland Road side.

While there have reportedly been talks over a new deal, there has been no progress from the initial reports of those discussions.

Aaronson has been a stalwart in Daniel Farke‘s team this season, making 34 Premier League appearances, but he is upgradable and his deal is winding down.

Leeds’ clash with Tottenham could well be make-or-break territory for the 25-year-old in terms of his long-term future in LS11.

Why Tottenham game could be litmus test for Leeds star Aaronson

Aaronson may start sweating about his status at Leeds, if he has a poor game against Spurs or if he is not selected again, as he was not for the win over Burnley.

He has notched a total of four goals and five assists in the league, but only two of those contributions have come in the last 14 matches.

With his contract running out next summer, the Whites have a huge decision to make on whether he is a part of their future or not.

Could Aaronson really leave Leeds?

Aaronson is a polarising figure amongst the Whites’ fanbase, as he often leaves supporters wanting more.

For an attacking midfielder, his numbers could definitely be improved, he averages 1.3 shots, with a goal every 565 minutes and 0.9 key passes, and completes 36 per cent of his dribbles, per Sofascore.

If the Peacocks can find somebody who they think could outperform the New Jersey-born star, they could let him walk.

However, he seems to be one of Farke’s favourites, and the likelihood is that they will get a new contract sorted out before it expires next year.

He may still be running scared, though, as nothing is done yet, and a run of poor performances could affect his chances of securing fresh terms and a payday.

It will be an interesting situation to keep an eye on as it develops, especially as the fans are split on whether the United States international is the man for the job.
