49ers Enterprises must learn from past Leeds United mistakes ahead of transfer window
The 49ers Enterprises need to get rid of Leeds United‘s dead wood and be ruthless in the summer transfer window.
When Leeds were last relegated to the Championship in 2023, the previous regime under Andrea Radrizzani had inserted relegation release clauses that allowed many players to head out on loan.
Like a crew abandoning a sinking ship, the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Max Wober, Jack Harrison, and more took that chance, while Leeds rebuilt under Daniel Farke.
Fast forward, and the Whites’ chances of staying in the Premier League are hanging in the balance, with the Yorkshire team just three points above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining.
Ahead of facing Manchester United on Monday night, Leeds need to learn from their past transfer mistakes when this summer’s window opens.

If Leeds stay up, they need to be ruthless
If Leeds do stay in the Premier League for another season, they have to get better and cutting ties with fringe players will help that.
They couldn’t get the likes of Illan Meslier off their books over the last two transfer windows, while the likes of Wober, Isaac Schmidt, and Harrison headed out on loan over the course of the season.
| Leeds’ first-team loanees | Loan destination |
| Max Wober | Werder Bremen |
| Isaac Schmidt | Werder Bremen |
| Largie Ramazani | Valencia |
| Mateo Joseph | Mallorca |
| Jack Harrison | Fiorentina |
Fortunately for Leeds, Meslier will be a free agent this summer after sitting on his hefty wages and not playing once for the club’s first team this term.
Ramazani has impressed on loan at Valencia and perhaps merits another bite at the cherry, while Joseph is currently injured. Joe Gelhardt is impressing on loan at Hull City, with Leeds needing to get a fee for him to facilitate a nice PSR boost.
Karl Darlow and Alex Cairns are out of contract this summer, with the latter’s homegrown status providing a valuable contribution for Leeds.
Darlow is Leeds’ number one and may deserve a contract renewal.
The likes of Sam Byram and Joel Piroe have made little to no impression in the Premier League and need to be moved on, ideally for a fee with the latter.

If they can shift some of their out-of-favour players, that could contribute to easing Leeds’ PSR issues and maybe help towards a new addition.
Too many transfer failures happened under the previous regime, but the 49ers can show Leeds mean business this summer with a quick, clean break. While it is easier said than done, football is ruthless, and there can be no room for sentimentality.
Relegation battle set to go to the wire
If Leeds do go down, then the transfer picture with their squad becomes an entirely different story.
After beating West Ham in the FA Cup quarter-finals, Leeds suffered several injury blows heading into Monday night’s clash at Old Trafford.
Elsewhere, relegation rivals West Ham beat Wolves on Friday, Nottingham Forest drew with Aston Villa on Sunday, and at the same time, Tottenham fell to another defeat as their winless league run in 2026 continued.

Leeds’ clash at third-placed United may be something of a free hit as the Whites haven’t won in the league at this ground since 1981.
And without the likes of Anton Stach and Joe Rodon, Leeds face an even bigger challenge. But if they want to stay up, getting results at places like these will be a huge boost.
Everyone would have taken this position back in August, so now it is about taking it with both hands and showing that mean streak in the summer to keep kicking on.
