Premier League make announcement on Lisandro Martinez red card in Man United vs Leeds
The Premier League have put out an announcement providing further clarity on Lisandro Martinez’s sending off in Leeds United‘s 2-1 win over Manchester United.
Martinez was dismissed by referee Paul Tierney a little over 10 minutes into the second half of Monday’s Premier League contest at Old Trafford.
The Argentina international was dismissed for pulling the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, doing so with so much force that he ripped his opponent’s hairband out.
That came at a point when the home side were already two goals down thanks to Noah Okafor’s first-half double.
And the Premier League have now released an update on the incident in Leeds’ clash with Man United via X.

Paul Tierney left with no choice over Lisandro Martinez red card
Man United defender Martinez may have thought he had got away with pulling on Calvert-Lewin’s hair.
However, these are the days of VAR interventions and the technology meant he was never going to get away with it.
| Manchester United | Leeds United | |
| 1 | Goals | 2 |
| 1.31 | Expected goals | 2.37 |
| 20 | Shots | 15 |
| 9 | Shots on target | 6 |
| 51.9% | Possession | 48.1% |
Gary Neville was adamant on Sky Sports’ coverage that Martinez would be dismissed, and so that proved.
Shortly after the on-field call by Tierney, a post via the Premier League Match Centre account read: “After VAR review, the referee issued a red card to Martínez for violent conduct.
“Referee announcement: ‘After review, Manchester United 6 is guilty of pulling his hair – violent conduct. Final decision is red card’.”
It is the second game in a row Man United have had a player sent off, having lost Harry Maguire in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth prior to the international break.
Sky Sports clear up Martinez confusion
Martinez looked surprise with the referee’s decision, even if everyone else already knew what was coming.
However, Sky commentator Seb Hutchinson said on the live coverage: “The reason there was some confusion is because Martinez didn’t hear the referee’s announcement.”

That’s that, then. A couple of sloppy Leeds moments aside, the Whites were superb at Old Trafford with this an away day for the ages.
Casemiro may have pulled one back, setting up a nervy finale, but that made the scenes at full-time all the sweeter as Leeds took an almighty step closer to safety.
