Marcelo Bielsa: Ex-Leeds boss offers clue behind why he snubbed Andrea Radrizzani move
Marcelo Bielsa’s kind words about Leeds United highlight why he snubbed a specific Andrea Radrizzani proposal.
For many Leeds fans, their footballing lives were changed forever in August 2018 when the Whites blew away Championship promotion favourites Stoke City at Elland Road in Bielsa’s first game in charge.
The intensity, quality of football, and sheer running power blew Leeds supporters away, with his legendary status enhanced by ending their 16-year stay outside of the Premier League.
However, it all ended in tears in February 2022 when the Argentine was sacked, with now Uruguay national team boss Bielsa yet to return to the Yorkshire outfit.
When he was dismissed, then-owner Radrizzani tried to contact Bielsa to rename the Thorp Arch training ground in his honour.
And going by these new remarks, it provides an insight into why the Leeds icon never gave a reply.

Marcelo Bielsa is cut from a different cloth
One of the first things Bielsa did when he took over at Leeds was to make the first-team players pick up litter around Thorp Arch.
He instilled the importance of being a strong collective unit, rather than individuals stealing the show.

On Wednesday, ahead of Uruguay’s clash with England on Friday, Bielsa spoke about his Leeds exit.
And it perfectly summed up his mercurial, idiosyncratic nature, while also providing an insight into why he didn’t take up the training ground name change offer.
He told reporters, “I have not been back because of the feelings of nostalgia. Sometimes we have to resist the feeling of going back, and I want to keep those feelings of nostalgia.
“Being at Leeds gave me the most beautiful memories and one of the best gifts football has given me.”
Daniel Farke is currently in the dugout at Leeds, with the German guiding the Whites to 15th in the Premier League right now. Incidentally, Bielsa wished his old side the best.

He added, “I wish that Leeds will be able to stay up because that is where they should be.
“The club is an institution with resources and footballers good enough to keep them up.”
Daniel Farke is fighting to get out of Bielsa’s shadow
Unfortunately for any Leeds manager since Bielsa, Whites fans are always going to compare them to the former Argentina boss.
He cast such a spell over the club, to the point where he may be their most loved manager, even ahead of Don Revie or Howard Wilkinson.
But winning the Championship, as Bielsa did, and keeping Leeds in the Premier League – as Farke hopes to do – will certainly help the Germans’ cause going forward.

Leeds may not play the beautiful, lung-busting football they did under Bielsa.
But Farke has proven many doubters wrong and deserves his place among a special group of Leeds managers.
However, that may only be the case for some supporters if the Leeds boss keeps them up this season. After all, the shadow that Bielsa casts is long.
