Liam Cooper sends James Milner message as former Leeds star announces retirement
Liam Cooper has shared his best wishes to James Milner after the former Leeds United man confirmed his retirement from football.
Milner has had an illustrious career, winning multiple top honours, and most recently breaking the Premier League record for appearances.
The Englishman, who began his career at Leeds back in 2002, has shared his gratitude for each of the clubs he has represented.
Growing up as a Leeds fan, Milner never intended to depart Elland Road, but financial issues meant that the Whites reluctantly accepted an offer for him.
Milner made 54 appearances for Leeds throughout his time in LS11 and will go down as one of the most successful exports out of the Whites’ academy.

What did Liam Cooper say to James Milner?
Milner has played for various clubs throughout his career, and he has made plenty of friends along the way.
However, Leeds United will always remain a core part of his identity, and that is clear by former captain Cooper sharing a message.
| James Milner’s career path | Appearances | Years |
| Leeds United | 54 | 2002-2004 |
| Swindon Town (loan) | 6 | 2003 |
| Newcastle United | 136 | 2004-2008 |
| Aston Villa (loan) | 33 | 2005-2006 |

| Liverpool | 332 | 2015-2023 |
| Brighton | 46 | 2023-2026 |
Writing underneath the announcement, Cooper “What a career and example for all, MOT” with a clapping emoji intertwined in the message as well.
Other Leeds-associated names include Ian Harte, sharing with him: “What a career @jamesmilnerofficial one of the best! Enjoy retirement and plenty of golf.”
While former Leeds man and teammate at Brighton, Georginio Rutter left a love heart and prayer emoji as Milner signs off on his 24-year career.
Meanwhile, current Leeds prospect Harry Gray has also like the post.

What could be next for James Milner?
Milner has not yet confirmed what is next for him, and in truth, after such a long career, he will likely just want to enjoy the time off.
However, the midfielder confirmed in 2022 that he was doing his coaching badges, which opens the door to a coaching role in the future.
He stated while at Liverpool and in an interview with Ben Foster: “I’m doing my badges, I’m on my [UEFA A Licence] now, so I’ve done quite a few sessions with the younger guys at the academy, which is good.”
After years of speculation about a potential return to Elland Road, perhaps the long-awaited comeback of the prodigal son could come in the coaching capacity.
Time will certainly tell all, but Leeds fans would undoubtedly welcome him back with open arms despite a 22-year absence.
Milner seemingly hinted a reunion could have happened in 2023, but Leeds United were too slow to react, with the Englishman already agreeing to join Brighton.
