Leeds United’s penalty shootout record analysed ahead of FA Cup showdown with West Ham
Leeds United face the prospect of a penalty shootout in their FA Cup quarter-final clash with West Ham on Sunday.
The Peacocks have already overcome Derby County, Birmingham City and Norwich City to get to this point.
This will be the first time that they face Premier League opposition, and it is expected to be a close encounter at the London Stadium, so it could go beyond extra time on 5 March.
Daniel Farke‘s side sits four points ahead of the Hammers, who occupy the final relegation zone place in the top-flight.
Leeds have a real chance of cup glory, and MOT Leeds News analyses their record in penalty shootouts through their history.

What is Leeds’ record in penalty shootouts?
Leeds beat Birmingham in the fourth-round after the clash went to penalties, so they have already experienced that pressure this season.
They have been involved in 16 shootouts in their history, but their record is not exactly encouraging for Farke and Co.
| Season | Opponent | Competition | Result |
| 1973/74 | Hibernian | UEFA Cup | Leeds win 5-4 on penalties |
| 1974/75 | Liverpool | Charity Shield | Liverpool win 6-5 on penalties |
| 1998/99 | CS Maritimo | UEFA Cup | Leeds win 4-1 on penalties |
| 1999/2000 | Leicester City | Carabao Cup | Leicester win 4-2 on penalties |
| 2005/06 | Wigan Athletic | FA Cup | Wigan win 4-2 on penalties |
| 2009/10 | Carlisle United | EFL Trophy | Carlisle win 6-5 on penalties |
| 2015/16 | Doncaster Rovers | Carabao Cup | Doncaster win 4-2 on penalties |
| 2016/17 | Fleetwood Town | Carabao Cup | Leeds win 5-4 on penalties |
| 2016/17 | Norwich | Carabao Cup | Leeds win 3-2 on penalties |
| 2017/18 | Burnley | Carabao Cup | Leeds win 5-3 on penalties |
| 2019/20 | Stoke | Carabao Cup | Stoke win 5-4 on penalties |
| 2020/21 | Hull City | Carabao Cup | Hull win 9-8 on penalties |
| 2021/22 | Fulham | Carabao Cup | Leeds win 6-5 on penalties |
| 2023/24 | Salford City | Carabao Cup | Salford win 9-8 on penalties |
| 2025/26 | Sheffield Wednesday | Carabao Cup | Sheff Wed win 3-0 on penalties |
| 2025/26 | Birmingham | FA Cup | Leeds won 4-2 on penalties |
The Whites have won seven of those, with the most recent being the 4-2 shootout win over the Blues that was mentioned above.
Who could take a penalty for Leeds?
Joel Piroe, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Brenden Aaronson and Sean Longstaff all converted their kicks in the shootout against the Blues last time out.
If they are on the pitch, they will likely be called upon to take them again, given that they showed composure at St Andrew’s.
| Leeds’ penalty takers this season (non-shootouts) | Scoring rate |
| Dominic Calvert-Lewin | 2/3 (66.7%) |
| Lukas Nmecha | 2/3 (66.7%) |
| Joel Piroe | 0/1 (0%) |
Piroe, Calvert-Lewin and Longstaff all missed in the shootout loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup earlier in the campaign, but they redeemed themselves against the Midlands outfit.
Lukas Nmecha is another contender to step up, given that he has taken three penalties this season, with two scored.
Pascal Struijk could also be selected, as the Dutchman notched three goals from four spot kicks in the 2023/24 season.
Beyond those options, if they are still involved in proceedings, it is anyone’s guess as to who will take a penalty, as no one else has taken one for the LS11 side this season.
Farke will surely have the squad doing extra training, especially on their technique from 12 years ahead of the contest, in case a shootout is required to settle who goes through to the Wembley semi-finals.
