Leeds United: Wilfried Gnonto exit looks certain as frustration continues under Daniel Farke

Wilfried Gnonto’s Leeds United career must be coming to an end.

The Italian winger burst onto the scene as an exciting youngster after joining Leeds from Swiss side FC Zurich in July 2022.

He has scored 23 goals for the Whites in that time, and has provided several moments of magic to light up Elland Road.

Gnonto was impressive in the Championship last season, registering 15 goal contributions as Leeds won the title on their return to the Premier League.

However, Leeds are in a relegation battle this campaign, and Daniel Farke clearly doesn’t trust him to play in the Premier League.

Wilfried Gnonto has gone 19 Premier League games without starting

Farke changed to a 3-5-2 tactic against Man City on 29 November, and Leeds have been incredible ever since.

The Whites have given themselves a fighting chance of staying in the top flight, and the German head coach has finally found a successful formula.

Because Leeds are excelling with two strikers and wing-backs out wide, Gnonto has paid a heavy price.

According to Sofascore, he has only played 380 minutes of Premier League football in 2025-26 and hasn’t started a Premier League match since the 3-2 loss to Man City, 19 games ago.

To make matters worse, Farke didn’t sub him on during Leeds’ 0-0 draws with Crystal Palace and Brentford over the last two weeks.

The fact that he wasn’t considered by his manager when the Whites were in desperate need of a goal is damning, to say the least.

It makes it even more likely that Gnonto will leave Elland Road in the summer, and although he has been a brilliant player for the club, it’s fair to say that they’ve moved on from him.

How will Gnonto be remembered by Leeds fans?

There’s no doubt that he’ll be frustrated by his current predicament in LS11, as his only real chance of impressing is in the FA Cup.

However, when he does leave, probably in the summer, he’ll be fondly remembered by the Elland Road faithful.

Gnonto’s impact in the top flight as a teenager was brilliant, and he was instrumental in getting Leeds back to the highest level of English football, which won’t go unnoticed.

Unfortunately, a move to a fellow Premier League club would be unlikely, although several Italian clubs will definitely be interested in his availability.

Farke is making the right call to leave Gnonto on the bench, and he can’t be blamed for doing what’s right by the team.

However, Leeds fans won’t forget the memories he created during his spell in West Yorkshire.
