Leeds United to pray for 2020 repeat after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s debut season

Leeds United will be hoping that Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s season has not just been a flash in the pan.

And the stats certainly suggest that it hasn’t been.

While the former Toffees star has endured some rough patches throughout the campaign, he has been their most reliable source of goals.

All but one of his goals have been central to the goal, showcasing his natural instinct to be in the right place at the right time, which certainly bodes well in that regard.

However, Leeds will need Calvert-Lewin at his best again next season if they are to progress, and, if possible, for him to repeat what he did in 2020.

2020 showcased the best of Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin has always been recognised as a solid Premier League striker, though he has had his seasons where things have not fallen for him.

However, between 2019 and 2021 was the best period of his career, with the striker picking up where he left off in 2020.

The 29-year-old scored 15 times for Everton in the 2019-20 campaign, which is the same number as he has managed for Leeds this season, with one game left.

Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin with Premier League goal contribution stats this season

He followed that season with 21 goals and an assist, which, to date, is his best goalscoring season in his career by far.

If Calvert-Lewin can pick up later in 2026 just as he did in 2020, then Leeds will have their goal worry diminished immediately.

Leeds still have striker decision to make

Even if Calvert-Lewin were to go on and score 21 goals next season, the Whites still need competition for him.

Joel Piroe looks destined for an exit, not that he has had much of a part to play this season, while Lukas Nmecha has been hit and miss.

Leeds cannot afford to rely so heavily on one man for goals as they have done with Calvert-Lewin, especially given his injury record prior to his move to Elland Road.
