Leeds United are not falling apart again thanks to Daniel Farke steel in relegation fight

Leeds United have become famous for falling apart again, but under Daniel Farke, that is no longer the case.

The chant gained traction after Leeds capitulated against Derby County in the Championship play-offs in 2019, although Marcelo Bielsa did lead the Whites to Championship glory the following year.

And even though the Argentine led Leeds to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League in 2021, the song had become commonplace amongst rival fans whenever the Yorkshire side was losing.

Leeds supporters tried to take ownership of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ song, but the threat of ridicule is always there.

However, Leeds are showing no signs of crumbling in their Premier League relegation fight, as Farke tackles this thorny issue head-on.

Leeds dispelling bottlers’ narrative

In Farke’s first season in charge of Leeds, the Whites seemed primed to get promoted after topping the table in March 2024.

However, what followed was a significant nosedive in form as Leeds failed to secure automatic promotion, before losing at Wembley to Southampton in the play-offs.

However, since then, Leeds have won a lot of big games when the pressure is on.

Three pressure-cooker wins for Leeds United under Daniel Farke
Plymouth Argyle 1-2 Leeds: Manor Solomon 91st-minute winnerSecure Leeds Championship title
West Ham 2-2 Leeds (2-4 penalties)Progress to first FA Cup semi-final since 1987
Man United 1-2 Leeds First win at Old Trafford in the league since 1981

Indeed, just when it looked like Burnley would pip Leeds to the Championship title last season, Manor Solomon’s stoppage-time winner at Plymouth ensured the Yorkshire team ended up on top.

This season, Leeds beat Birmingham City and West Ham on penalties to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 39 years.

And Noah Okafor’s double against Manchester United ensured they won at Old Trafford for the first time in the league for 45 years.

Moreover, they ensured that the Man United win wasn’t a blip when Leeds backed it up with a 3-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

After the Man United victory, Farke said: “I’m unbelievably proud of the boys, what a week we’ve had. We are working to get rid of this old narrative that ‘Leeds are falling apart again’. We want to deliver when it counts.”

Farke has brought a sense of calm to a very emotional club like Leeds.

And with him at the helm, there is a steeliness to his team. They do not look like they will fall apart again. If anything, they look like they could climb the table.

Leeds’ transfer risks pay off with potent attack

When Leeds got promoted last summer, all eyes were on which players would be signed to strengthen their attack.

So when the transfer window shut in September last year, many Leeds fans were underwhelmed by the recruits of Noah Okafor, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Lukas Nmecha.

Leeds took a punt on the trio, who were quite injury-prone before heading to Elland Road, and that gamble has paid off.

Between them in all competitions, they have scored 26 goals, 24 of which have come in the Premier League.

That has helped lift Leeds eight points clear of the relegation zone with five matches to go. If they can beat Bournemouth on Wednesday, they will be well and truly safe.
