Leeds United: Daniel Farke borrows from Marcelo Bielsa’s playbook in Premier League intensity reveal

Leeds United have applied the most high-intensity pressures under Daniel Farke in the Premier League this season, something which Marcelo Bielsa would be proud of.

The Whites look to have found their top-flight identity under the German head coach, and the playstyle is looking very similar to what the football looked like under Bielsa.

The now Uruguay head coach refined Leeds’ way of playing at Elland Road, with the infamous “murderball” behind the pressing system.

The Whites have changed their ways significantly under Farke this season, but are still within touching distance of the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Leeds could get relegated, but Farke’s formula, which he may have taken influence from Bielsa, could save them.

What else do Leeds United’s pressing stats say?

The Whites return to league action when they face Manchester United on Monday, and an intense press will be needed to silence Old Trafford.

Leeds always have feisty games against the Red Devils, and with both teams aiming for something this campaign, it will be as fierce as ever.

As highlighted by Opta Analyst on X, the Whites have applied 12,556 high-intensity pressures to opponents this season, which is the most out of any Premier League club.

They also sit second behind Everton for pressures in the opposition’s half with 6,252. On top of this, only three other teams have won the ball more following high-intensity pressure, with the Whites sitting on 1,680.

As a result of this system, which is very reminiscent of the Leeds under Bielsa, the Whites have put 59.5 per cent of their opponents’ touches under high pressure, which is also the most in the Premier League.

Leeds are close to avoiding relegation, and another season in the top-flight could see these numbers soar even higher.

Daniel Farke orchestrated the turning point in Leeds’ season

Leeds were not getting anywhere with their 4-2-3-1 formation, and Farke’s practical change to the system that’s seen now was needed.

It’s fair to say that most fans didn’t see it coming, given the Whites boss had previously been stubborn over his system when asked to switch things up.

However, having more men in defence allows Leeds to press without leaving themselves exposed, and as a result, more points have been added to the board.

If Leeds did stay up, the 49ers would surely have to back Farke, as it seems the head coach has made his own variation of Bielsa ball.
