Leeds United close in on unwanted Premier League record after Brentford stalemate

Leeds United‘s barren spell in front of goal in the Premier League shows no signs of abating after their goalless draw with Brentford.

Leeds fans went into their Saturday night kick-off at Elland Road against the Bees with plenty of optimism, but by the time they left, most of that had evaporated.

The two teams played out a dire contest as neither side created any clear-cut chances in a game that wasn’t for the purists.

In the end, the result wasn’t a bad one for Leeds as they extended their gap to the relegation zone to four points following West Ham’s loss at Aston Villa on Sunday.

But a fourth Leeds game in a row without a goal is concerning, even if Daniel Farke may not admit it.

Goal-shy Leeds have growing problem

Despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin getting his first England call-up in more than five years, the striker was quite anonymous in the 0-0 draw with Brentford.

Leeds had 14 shots, but only four were on target, while they and Brentford created a combined Expected Goals tally of just one (0.54 vs 0.46).

Leeds’ run in Premier League

The last time Leeds actually scored a Premier League goal was way back in the 31st minute of their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on 21 February.

Their last league victory was on 6 February in a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest, meaning they are on their longest winless run of the season.

And according to Opta analyst Jonny Cooper, Leeds are now on the second-longest shooting run of any Premier League team without scoring a goal.

Leeds would have targeted the Sunderland game and the Brentford encounter as possible three-pointers, and the fact that they picked up just one point will be troubling to many fans.

Leeds have reasons to be cheerful

While Leeds’ lack of goals is troubling, the results around them this weekend weren’t too bad.

West Ham lost to Aston Villa, while Nottingham Forest thumped Tottenham. That means Leeds’ three-point gap to the bottom three is now up to four.

Moreover, they have a FA Cup quarter-final away at West Ham to look forward to after the international break, in what could be a welcome break as a win sends them to Wembley.

And while they can’t score at the moment, their defence kept 19-goal Brentford striker Thiago in check at Elland Road on Saturday with relative ease.

The Brazilian was limited to just one shot off target as they snuffed out the Premier League’s second-highest goalscorer this season.

That was Leeds’ second clean sheet in a row after their goalless draw at Crystal Palace last Sunday, in a match where they spent the second half with 10 men.

Leeds are showing their fighting spirit, albeit with a lack of quality up front, with only seven games to go.
