Dominic Calvert-Lewin form for Leeds is a bigger issue than Daniel Farke will admit

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was on the scoresheet again for Leeds United against Wolves, but his threat from open play is still a concern.

The Whites’ victory at home to Wolves has afforded them plenty of breathing space ahead of the final five games of the season, with a nine-point gap having emerged between them and Spurs.

Noah Okafor continued his fine form for Leeds, while Brenden Aaronson also marked his 100th start for the Whites in fashion with an assist.

However, Calvert-Lewin was again unable to have the desired impact in the final third, despite a flurry of chances in the first half that went missing.

With Leeds looking close to being safe from relegation, it means very little right now, but it is something that Daniel Farke needs to address.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin woes continue in front of goal

While he dispatched his penalty with ease, it means that Calvert-Lewin has now gone seven Premier League games without a goal from open play, and just one in his last 11.

With nine goals from 22 games prior, it’s a big drop off.

Okafor has taken the weight off his shoulders with the goals, but that is not to say that his recent form is not a concern, because it certainly is.

In fact, the Englishman has played more of a role defensively than he has offensively, which is far from what Farke would have had in mind for the final run-in.

Calvert-Lewin had an effort from point-blank range saved, while also failing to hit the target with his other two open play efforts in the game, and having failed to score from 1.32 xG against Man United, it’s clear that his confidence is low.

The Whites aren’t exactly blessed with other options for the striker position, but it paints a clear picture as to what is needed this summer.

Leeds must replace Calvert-Lewin as a priority this summer

Calvert-Lewin will have a huge role to play for Leeds next season, but it’s clear that they can improve in that area of the pitch.

The Englishman has underperformed his xG massively this season, with three of his goals now having come from the penalty spot, meaning he is actually one of the biggest underperformers in the Premier League.

Leeds need someone they can rely on throughout a full campaign to score the goals, and having that figure may take the pressure off Calvert-Lewin.
