Leeds United: Swedish media react to ‘big bang’ incident as Gabriel Gudmundsson suffers knee injury

Leeds United will be sweating as the Swedish media seem to think Gabriel Gudmundsson’s injury in his country’s 3-1 win over Ukraine this Thursday didn’t look good at all.

The left-wing back was one of several Leeds stars to get a call-up to their national team, and was perhaps one of the main men that Daniel Farke didn’t want to get injured.

Gudmundsson has been terrific for the Whites this season, and with no real cover at left-wing back, Farke will be hoping it’s nothing to serious.

The Swede did managed to play 77 minutes in the game, helping his side to a 3-1 win over Ukraine, as he will be hoping to play in the last round of his country’s World Cup qualification.

However, Gudmundsson’s injury will worry Leeds regardless, and the Swedish media weighed in on the matter.

What did the Swedish media say about Gabriel Gudmundsson?

Gudmundsson is a regular for Sweden, and his performances in the Premier League this season meant he was always going to receive the call-up.

His country will now play Poland, where the two sides will fight it out, as only one of them will be able to book a slot in North America for this year’s World Cup.

Gudmundsson vs Ukraine

Expressen said that the 26-year-old has a “sharp input” up until his injury, which they described as a “big bang” to the knee. They also commented to say how the Leeds star insisted on playing initially, though he was seen limping.

Another Swedish media outlet, Fotboll Skanalen, wrote that Gudmundsson looked “a force on the left”, as he played in his normal advanced role for his country until his withdrawal. They commented on how he came close to scoring with one of his shots, hitting the woodwork, giving him a four out of five rating.

Aftonbladet commented to point out that Farke’s key man was seen holding an ice pack over his knee moments after coming off the field, describing the injury as a “knock”.

Gudmundsson’s last performance for Leeds came in the 0-0 draw to Crystal Palace, where the Whites feel he was wrongfully sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Leeds fans will still be hoping for his injury to heal up quickly and for it just to be an impact issue, no more.

What has Gudmundsson said about his injury?

As mentioned earlier, Leeds have no natural cover for Gudmundsson at left-wing back, and that was seen in the Whites’ most recent match.

Leeds drew 0-0 with Brentford before the break, and Farke was forced to play James Justin and Jayden Bogle on either wing, with the former in place of Gudmundsson.

While speaking to the Swedish media after the game, Gudmundsson reassured his people, and the Leeds fans, that his knee issue isn’t as bad as first feared.

He said: “I just got a bang. Now it’s just like everything else, recover and take care of the body.”

He admitted that he hopes to be fit for Sweden’s decisive game against Poland on Tuesday, but ideally he’s not 100 per cent in time, but will come through for Leeds before the next Premier League game.
