The £14m PSR verdict Leeds United have with Isaac Schmidt and Max Wober after update from Germany

Leeds United are closely following the developments of both Max Wober and Isaac Schmidt’s loan stay with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

Daniel Farke and other Elland Road internal figures decided it was best to send the pair out on loan in the summer, with them both not in their Premier League plans for this season.

The Whites signed Schmidt and Wober for a combined £14million, a fee which the 49ers are desperate to somehow recoup.

That’s because Leeds have some PSR concerns that they hope to resolve in order to become a stable Premier League club.

Werder Bremen director speaks out as PSR update shared for Isaac Schmidt

Wober’s loan has been a disaster, and his transfer in itself has been a failure, with the centre-back only playing one game so far in Germany due to an injury.

Werder Bremen have a £3.5m buy option for him, but given his injury struggles, that looks out of the question now.

As for Schmidt, there is more of a chance that the Whites can recoup some of the £3m they spent on the defender, as Werder Bremen also have a buy option in his deal.

According to Leeds Live on Thursday, Werder Bremen’s director, Clemens Fritz, has confirmed that the Bundesliga side has yet to decide on whether to sign the right-back permanently.

The buy option is said to be in the “low millions”, and if triggered, the Whites would make in the region of £2m to £3m, that would either have no negative impact on the PSR books, or it would either be a slight boost.

Isaac Schmidt Leeds United contract expiry

So things are looking good on the front with Schmidt, but given Wober was valued at £3.5m this summer, and with his deal expiring in just over a year, he could be worth a lot less now.

The duo cost £14m together, but Leeds are now surely braced for a big PSR loss from the inevitable future departure of Wober.

The only saving grace with Max Wober transfer

Transfers nowadays are usually amortised fees that are paid to clubs over the course of a player’s contract.

For example, Schmidt cost the Whites £3m on a four-year contract, and there is a good chance that they will pay St. Gallen £750,000 per year for the 26-year-old.

The same can be said in Leeds’ case for Wober, who joined the Whites in 2023 on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

This means that while the Whites could make a loss by selling Wober in the low millions this summer, they would have less on their book value for the season that the sale would count for, as they’ve already paid off a big chunk in past campaigns.
