Leeds take pressure off attack ahead of Chelsea showdown as Daniel Farke adapts again

Leeds United are once again sharing the goals around their team, which bodes well for the rest of the season.

In Daniel Farke‘s first season in charge at Leeds, the German was too reliant on the likes of Crysensio Summerville, Dan James, Georginio Rutter, or Wilfried Gnonto providing a moment of magic to beat teams.

Indeed, if you cannot do that when you have some of the best players in the Championship, what will you do when your squad is outmatched in the Premier League?

In his second season, Farke got his team playing in a more cohesive and less individualistic way as they won the Championship title.

Leeds have adapted to the rigours of the Premier League, thanks in no small part to Farke’s improving managerial acumen, and now, they have a chance to reach an FA Cup final for the first time since 1973.

Leeds sharing the goals around

In the 2023-24 season, Leeds scored 81 goals, but none were from midfield, while just six came from defence.

In the following campaign, Leeds’ defenders contributed 20 of their 95 goals, and the midfield notched 14. While they still rely heavily on their attack for goals, recently, the Whites’ wider squad has chipped in.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Noah Okafor, and Lukas Nmecha have 24 league goals between them, but the contributions of midfielders Anton Stach and Brenden Aaronson certainly help.

Moreover, James Justin, Joe Rodon, Ao Tanaka, and Sean Longstaff have all popped up with two from defence and midfield respectively.

Indeed, in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth and the 3-0 win over Wolves, Longstaff and Justin added to their tallies in what was two unlikely scorers.

Having goal threats across the pitch is so vital. For one, it can ease the pressure on strikers knowing they have attacking talents behind them. Moreover, Farke has shown he can adapt despite many doubters repeatedly bringing up his two failed seasons in the Premier League at Norwich City last summer.

His switch to a 3-5-2 formation has saved Leeds’ season, and now they look set to stay up. The German has shown he can hack it at this level, and the Whites’ players have stepped up when it has mattered.

An improving coach and players delivering under pressure – that is a good recipe for success.

Leeds sense FA Cup opportunity

Heading into their trip to Wembley on Sunday for the FA Cup semi-finals, Leeds are on a five-match unbeaten run, while Chelsea are seemingly spiralling out of control.

Five straight losses, including no goals in that stretch, ultimately cost Liam Rosenior his job after just three months in charge.

Although Leeds have taken four points from the Blues this season, they have only won twice at Wembley in 11 visits.

Farke will have a couple of selection dilemmas for this one, with many fans speculating over what side Leeds will pick to face Chelsea.

As Leeds speed away from the relegation zone, this is a huge opportunity for Leeds to make a little bit of history.
