Leeds confirm Phillips injury won't keep him out of Euros

Leeds United are confident that midfielder Kalvin Phillips will be fit enough to feature for England at Euro 2020 if he is selected in Gareth Southgate's squad.

The 25-year old suffered a last-minute shoulder injury against West Brom on Sunday following a coming together with Grady Diangana, causing Gary Lineker to fret when discussing the incident on Match of the Day [23/05/21].

However Leeds have confirmed in a brief statement that they expect Phillips to make a full recovery before he could be called upon by the Three Lions.

Released as an injury update on their official website, Leeds said: "Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips picked up a shoulder injury in the closing stages of Sunday’s Premier League fixture with West Bromwich Albion.

It would have been devastating for Phillips after the season that he's had to fall foul to injury just days before Gareth Southgate announces his England squad, so we're pleased to see that isn't the case.

Additionally we don't want to see him injured for the sakes of Leeds, because the last thing he needs is for injury to hamper his pre-season preparations later this summer.

However fortunately Phillips is fit and available to feature, and we'd be extremely surprised if Southgate didn't pick him for his squad.

Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice are both expected to be named as England's defensive midfield options, but with the squad having been expanded to 26 players this year, Southgate will surely pick another midfielder too.

Phillips has been around the England squad all season while playing regularly and playing well for the Whites, and it only seems right that Southgate would keep faith and name Phillips as an option.

We're hopeful that he'll be included tomorrow and represent the club as well as England on the continental stage.
