Richard Keys: Leeds United would be left ‘bankrupt’ by Harry Redknapp as news emerges on Thursday

Richard Keys is delighted at the prospect of Harry Redknapp getting the Leeds United job while bankrupting and relegating them.

The Mirror reported on Thursday morning (16 February) that the FA Cup winner was ready to come out of retirement to make a sensational return to management at Elland Road until the end of the season, in light of the club’s struggles to find a successor to Jesse Marsch.

And Keys is in full support of the idea but not because he believes it would be in any way the right move for the Whites.

Reacting to the Mirror story on his personal Twitter account he wrote: “Yes please. This would be so much fun – unless you’re a Leeds fan. He’d bankrupt them & take them down. It’s not April 1 though is it?”

Chaos

It is hard to say whether even Redknapp truly believes he would be able to make a success of the Leeds United job, or whether the manager hunt has become such a circus that anyone is now prepared to throw their name into the hat.

The former Tottenham and West Ham boss hasn’t been a Premier League manager for the best part of a decade, so expecting him to be parachuted in and immediately get to grips with the Whites squad is a stretch.

If he is the only alternative then it frankly feels like a better option to stick with Michael Skubala and company, since they know the players and the club.

But an emergency option who knows how to operate in the top flight, who makes the side hard to beat and gets the club over the line of survival ahead of a proper appointment in the summer, should not be ruled out at this point.

Not having a plan in place once Marsch was sacked looks like a major oversight, as the priorities have all proven to be unavailable.

So with the preferred steps already out the window, top flight survival has to be the number one priority over taking on a long-term manager right now who is a long way off being first-choice.

But with even the self-styled relegation specialist Sam Allardyce a year and a half out of the game it is a fair question as to who would be the right option, but it seems like Redknapp, out of the Premier League since leaving QPR in 2015, would surely not be the go-to man in that mould.
