Leeds United: ‘Shambolic’ £900m Premier League update drops with EFL clubs ‘dismayed’

Leeds United could be among a number of EFL clubs who have been left in dismay after the Premier League’s £900million support plan was delayed yet again.

The Times reported via their website on 12 March that the Premier League now face significant pressure after their clubs failed to secure backing for the deal at a two-hour meeting this week.

It is said that some EFL clubs are unhappy after, having agreed to present the deal by 11 March, no such deal was reached. One source went as far as to label the league “absolutely shambolic”.

Could Leeds United benefit from £900million Premier League deal?

News emerged on 20 February that EFL clubs looked set to receive a share of a heavy financial windfall after an energy meeting was called by the Premier League to thrash out the details.

However, with that meeting already having taken place and no agreement in sight over the financial support deal, which was set to cost Premier League clubs between £837million and £925million, pressure has ramped up on the league.

The deal was expected to be a landmark moment for relations between the Premier League and EFL, with clubs in the lower divisions set to benefit most, and it is likely them who have been left gutted by the recent development.

This, of course, would require Leeds to be in the Championship when the deal begins, which would be far from an ideal situation for the club given their ambition to achieve promotion this season.

In fact, if Leeds are promoted during that time, they would likely be on the other end of the deal, giving money to the EFL rather than receiving the windfall.

If they should remain in the Championship, however, the proposed £900million deal would be of great benefit to the club, particualrly if they were stuck down for a number of years given the financial issues that come along with that.

EFL clubs overall should contnue to apply pressure on the Premier League in hopes of pushing a deal through which would serve as great importance to the country’s lower clubs and not just those at the top.
