Leeds United legal fight ‘far from over’ amid Everton points deduction appeal news
Simon Leaf, one of the UK’s leading Sports Lawyers, has suggested that the legal case concerning Leeds United and Everton is “far from over” with the floodgates set to be opened, according to the i.
The newspaper reported via its website on 4 February that, with Leeds, Burnley and Leicester City previously signalling their intention to sue for compensation, that door remains open, with Everton’s appeal process underway.
It was said that the clubs’ initial approach was rejected by a separate commission as they did not feel the clubs had a standing to make the compensation request, however, a claim could still be made.
Speaking to the i [4 February], Leaf shared: “When looking at the decision of that commission itself, it still very much opened the door to future claims by those clubs and it even went as far as saying that it was ‘satisfied that the applicant clubs have potential claims for compensation’ provided some of the other legal conditions were met.”
49ers and Leeds in another legal battle
After Everton were initially reported to be investigated by the Premier League, it was made clear that Leeds would be among those clubs vying for compensation following what was seen as an unfair advantage which saw the Yorkshire club relegated.
In fact, since their takeover of Leeds in the summer, the 49ers have been proven to be willing to enter legal battles if they will benefit the club. Alongside the ongoing Everton case, they also made a second appeal in their £24million battle against Jean-Kevin Augustin.

The owners have not shied away from what may prove to be tricky legal proceedings, and with another one potentially on their hands now with Everton’s appeal process underway, that legal team could be prepared again.
Leaf also told the i that the floodgates for any legal claims would be well and truly opened if Everton are handed a second punishment, with Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, and Chelsea also being investigated.
