Leeds United lead charge for EFL change amid anger at Premier League, meeting scheduled

Leeds United are among the Championship clubs leading the charge for changes to spending restrictions for EFL clubs, according to The Telegraph.

John Percy’s article [5 June] reveals how Leeds along with five other Championship clubs are pushing for an alternative to the current Profit & Sustainability Regulations (PSR) system.

However, some league rivals argue that lifting spending limits will plague clubs below the Premier League and see repeated financial oblivion in the coming years.

EFL clubs are appearing to prefer mirroring UEFA’s newly created 70% squad ratio for the 2025-26 season, with other alternatives set to be mulled over at a meeting scheduled for Friday – but the Premier League have so far failed to agree a deal which is bitterly frustrating clubs in the lower divisions.

Hull City, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City and Cardiff City are said to be the other Championship clubs involved alongside Leeds.

Leeds United leading charge for change

Leeds United in particular would have been thought to breach PSR if they were promoted this season due to contracted Premier League bonuses, but are still in a race against time to balance the books.

Whilst there are a quarter of the Championship’s clubs certain to be in favour of a new proposal at Friday’s anticipated meeting in the Cotswolds, a further 10 clubs must agree to trigger an official vote.

It will be a close call – Leeds themselves have been helped out by their lucrative sponsorship deal with Red Bull, but must raise over £70m to repay historical transfer instalments by the end of this month which makes it almost certain that the likes of Crysencio Summerville will be offloaded, along with whichever returning loanees they can raise funds from.

Locked at loggerheads, the meeting could be make-or-break in both directions for a variety of Championship clubs as the failure to agree on a proposal with the Premier League rolls on.
