Leeds United at risk of FFP breach in Premier League as new rules emerge – expert analysis

Leeds United would be “at risk” of breaching the proposed new spending rules if they are promoted back to the Premier League, according to i News.

The outlet reported via their website on 12 March that based on modelling by finance expert Kieran Maguire the Whites might breach the new regulations, where clubs would only be able to spend a percentage of their revenue on wages and transfers, compared to the current system of a £105million limit for allowable losses over a three year period.

According to Maguire’s numbers, using 2022/23 figures, Leeds United would be in breach of a cap by over £11million, with i News also stating that the club would likely face issues “especially given they will need to spend” if they return to the top flight from the second tier.

Kieran Maguire model suggests Leeds United face spending breach if promoted

Assuming Daniel Farke is able to get the Whites back to the top flight at the first time of asking, and it is still quite an assumption even allowing for their excellent form in the Championship, there could be a headache waiting for them.

The 49ers would surely have been prepared to spend on the squad to give Leeds United a good chance to compete back in the top flight, given their presence in the Premier League is key to the long-term plan and Elland Road developments.

Burnley’s struggles this season as second tier winners show that investment in the squad is necessary unless a club is committed to a model which may see them yo-yo between the divisions multiple times.

The Whites would certainly be boosted in a big way if they could bring in some good money for all the players who departed on loan after relegation, but other than the £20million already brought in from Bournemouth for Luis Sinisterra things aren’t looking especially hopeful on that front.

Even Marc Roca’s presumed permanent move to Real Betis appears to be hanging in the balance, so the club’s revenue might be straining to contain the necessary expenditure of a return to the Premier League if the new regulations come in this summer.

The current rules haven’t worked out very well for Leeds United, with all three clubs who finished above the Whites last term now falling foul of them but sanctions coming too late to be of any benefit even though there hasn’t been a charge levelled at Elland Road, and the new ones could be even more of an issue.
