Kieran Maguire shares if Leeds United in financial crisis after loss v Southampton
Leeds United fans have been reassured by Kieran Maguire that there is no financial “crisis” at Elland Road despite their play-off final defeat.
The football finance expert responded to a post on X regarding their cash flow in the upcoming transfer window, saying that Leeds’ owners 49ers Enterprises will provide the funding to offset up to £190million in scheduled transfer fees.
Maguire’s post mentioned that these unpaid fees do not have a negative effect on the Whites in the Championship’s profit and sustainability rules, meaning they will not be forced into selling players to make up that outstanding £190million.
Sales are still expected though after the 1-0 loss to Southampton at Wembley on 26 May, with players like Crysencio Summerville expected to attract plenty of suitors.
Leeds United set for another summer of change
A record-breaking fourth play-off final defeat on Sunday means it’s another season of Championship football for Leeds, and the nature of that will undoubtedly see some of the club’s top players depart.
Summerville, the Championship’s Player of the Year award winner, has already been linked with a Premier League move, and the Whites will already be preparing to field offers for the Dutchman after a season in which he managed more than 30 goals and assists combined.
There’s also the small matter of eight loanees returning to Elland Road following temporary moves away after relegation from the Premier League, with question marks hanging over several – having had mixed success across Europe in recent months.
Leeds’ squad this season was one that achieved 90 points, going closer to automatic promotion than any other in Championship history, but still coming up short.
With £190million in transfer fees to offset – large amounts of which are to pay for those players who’ve spent this season out on loan – the Whites are in line for another busy summer of financial churn and changes aplenty in the squad with top-flight rivals circling.
