Everton would have wanted Ben Godfrey to sign a new contract had he left for Leeds United or AC Milan in the window, according to the Athletic.

The news outlet reported on 2 February that the Toffees did not want the defender to leave, but in case he did he would've been told to accept fresh terms as his deal runs out at the end of next season.

Leeds ended up signing Connor Roberts from Burnley instead - an out-and-out full-back - unlike Godfrey who's mainly a centre-back by trade.

Better option

Leeds appear to have made the right decision by bringing in Roberts instead of Godfrey on transfer Deadline Day.

Despite Godfrey's quality as a centre-back, he's been inconsistent and Leeds already faced a shortage of specialist right-back options following the departures of Djed Spence and Luke Ayling in January.

Daniel Farke had been deploying Archie Gray and Jamie Shackleton as makeshift right-backs, highlighting the urgent need for a specialist in that position.

By bringing in Roberts, a proven and experienced full-back, Leeds addressed this deficiency effectively.

Roberts' arrival provides stability and depth to Leeds' defensive lineup, offering Farke a reliable option for the remainder of the season.

Additionally, Roberts' experience in the Premier League adds valuable top-flight pedigree to the squad, enhancing Leeds' competitiveness and defensive solidity.
