Angus Kinnear makes new Leeds United PSR admission after transfer deadline

Angus Kinnear has confirmed that Leeds United remain close to profit and sustainability restrictions after the transfer window.

The Whites’ chief was quoted in the minutes from the Leeds United Supporters Advisory Board’s latest meeting (11 October) that they remain close to the financial fair play limits in the division.

Kinnear insisted that fees brought in for outgoing players this summer were high, meaning that the Whites are not set to be placed under any EFL restrictions such as transfer embargo or sanctions.

As quoted in the minutes, Kinnear said: “AK begins with a football update. AK explains that it is difficult to communicate going into, and during, a transfer window regarding incomings and outgoings.

“Club were able to retain certain players other Championship clubs wouldn’t have been able to, including Wilfried Gnonto, Ethan Ampadu, Pascal Struijk and Illan Meslier.

“Club is still close to PSR limits. The values brought in for the players sold were high.

“On PSR, AK states that in the EFL, if clubs aren’t on track to meet requirements they can be put under
embargoes and sanctioned. Club don’t expect any issues.”

Will Leeds United breach PSR at Elland Road this season?

While some supporters will be unsettled by the fact that Leeds appear to remain close to the PSR limit, that update alone justifies the Whites’ transfer business during the summer transfer window.

It’s safe to say sections of the fanbase were less than pleased to see so high-profile members of Daniel Farke’s squad depart Elland Road after the playoff final defeat, but it simply had to happen to ensure the Whites weren’t sanctioned this season.

As Leeds look to win promotion back to the Premier League this term, it would be a massive blow if they were hit with a transfer embargo or a point deduction. The Whites narrowly missed out on the top two last term despite winning more than 90 points so they cannot afford to give other teams headstarts.

Hopefully, Kinnear and the club’s confidence hasn’t been misplaced and the Whites do avoid any punishments between now and the end of the season.

This level of transparency is excellent to see from the club and its chiefs and it would be excellent if it was continued for the remainder of the season.
