49ers to resent woeful Leeds United signing after incident may have cost Daniel Farke’s job
Dominic Calvert-Lewin cost Leeds United a win against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Leeds were edged out 2-1 by Villa after a Morgan Rogers brace inspired a comeback that everyone inside Elland Road feared.
The 49ers may choose to sack Daniel Farke in the coming days as things don’t seem to be improving under the German head coach.
Calvert-Lewin was at the heart of one moment in particular that prevented the Whites from taking anything from the game.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin caused disallowed goal vs Aston Villa
Calvert-Lewin has truly been a terrible signing for Leeds, and perhaps the only saving grace is that he didn’t cost a penny in transfer fees.
The 49ers will surely be looking back at the signing as the worst of the summer, with the striker once again bringing attention for the wrong reasons.
- Calvert-Lewin has started seven Premier League games for Leeds
- He has an xG of 2.09, according to Sofascore
- Calvert-Lewin has only scored one time for Leeds
The Whites were trailing 2-1 in the second half before Daniel James fired the ball towards Emi Martinez in the Villa goal, hitting Calvert-Lewin’s arm on the way into the net.
While it’s not exactly clear if the ball would have gone in off a Villa defender anyway, questions have to be asked over Calvert-Lewin.
Why is the striker not throwing any other part of his body at the ball? It’s an open goal.
He lacks the crucial instinct needed to be a striker, let alone an option at this level.
Now, Farke is paying the price for the striker’s blunder.
Leeds would have won if Calvert-Lewin scored
Leeds are in the relegation zone for the first time this season after results went elsewhere during game week 12.
But the Whites should only be focusing on themselves. If Calvert-Lewin managed to convert, Leeds would have won the game – I’m sure of it.
| Games | Wins | Draws | Losses |
| 6 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
You could hear the roar from Elland Road once the ball went in, and with momentum behind Leeds, they could have staged a terrific comeback.
Instead, all the blame is on Farke, but ultimately, he should know better than to play Calvert-Lewin at this point.
