Victor Orta sparks fresh doubt over Leeds United future as he admits return to Spain is 'medium term plan'
Victor Orta has sparked fresh doubt over his future at Leeds United after admitting that he wants to return to Spain for personal reasons.
The director of football at Elland Road has been a divisive figure at the club after bringing in some fantastic players, but clashing with fans with his outspoken style in the stands.
And Orta has now revealed in an interview with Spanish media (28 March) that he is hoping to return to Sevilla in the "medium term" and could potentially replace Monchi at the football club too.
“Being Monchi’s successor, in any team, I don’t know if it’s something I’m prepared for, but obviously at some point I want to return to Spain,” he said, as translated by Football Espana (28 March).
“I feel very selfish. I want my son’s grandparents to spend more time with him, even though he has been there for a long time, there are cultural differences that I find difficult, the weather thing, which helps. You get here and it’s 20 degrees.
"My home is Spain and I will have to return. I don’t know what as, if at the club or doing other things, but in the medium term I want to return because I need it personally.”
Bittersweet
There's no doubting that Orta isn't the most popular man at Leeds, because he often lets his mouth go without thinking first and it gets him in trouble.
We've seen him screaming at fans in the stands after victories and worse, but there is also no doubt that he is very good at his job and is a big reasons why we've been in the Premier League for the last three seasons.
He was hugely influential in transfers such as Raphinha in and out of the club, he worked quickly to sign Wilfried Gnonto last summer and the likes of Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Max Wober, Luis Sinisterra and Rodrigo were all in part down to him too.
There was some talk that he was a target for Chelsea earlier in the season and while that never came to fruition, fans were split on if it was a good or bad thing.
But now it seems that he's already got one foot out of the door and the club will hopefully be planning for his exit, which could come this summer if the takeover takes place as expected.
